continuity kit for adopting parents and babies
The research was developed during my work with a home harboring babies awaiting adoption.
During a period of 4-12 month I have discussed various issues with the professional team including phycologists and care takers.
In addition I have discussed hard and missing topics with adopting parents and these have lead me to the golden conclusion which is fundamental for the entire work. The situation is causing an emotional void.
The meaning of emotional void for babies -
During discussion with a clinical psychologist and a former care taker in the home, it has been made clear that parents would rather turn to a new page and put the baby’s former life behind. It was found that that ignoring the early stages could harm the normal development as the baby’s life are abruptly change, his past erase and all his life are seemingly ‘rebooted’. The baby’s development in his early stages is based on smell, feel sound and voice therefore it has been made clear that continuity must be maintained from the stage he was in the home to his new life as an adopted child.
The meaning for adopting parents -
Parents remember the first time their baby crawled, rolled over or walked. It is a pat of modern life to record thousands of clips, photos documenting every smile, laughter or twitch. Adopting parents do not have this information encompassing the initial experiences and behaviors during the first moth while staying in the home and the parents do not have common encounters and experiences with the baby.
The proposed solution - crating a continuity kit for adopting parents and babies.
The system is composed of data collecting objects and a unique transition object for every baby.
In addition, there are links to mobile, embedded cameras and to exiting fixed cameras at the home.
Every baby is assigned a transitional object following him from the home to the adopting parents’ house. The object is suitable for babies up to one year of age begins as a 2D object shaped as a blanket or mini-carpet. The object can be placed in the baby’s bed and under the blankets or sheets. At the age of 3-4 month the additional parts can be added to the object making it a 3D object shaped like a doll or fur animal.
It is important to note that all the elements are interlinked and data-fusion is required to obtain the goals for the parent and baby. The purpose of the system is indeed to bridge the temporal and emotional gap and to support the formation of a new family cell.
